Live event discusses adolescent maternity in Brazil

The International Center for Equity in Health (ICEH/UFPel), in partnership with Umane, will host the live event “Adolescent Maternity in Brazil: a conversation on equity, social vulnerability, and the future” next Monday, July 21, at 5 PM (Brasília time). The event, which will be broadcast live, will present for the first time the results of a new and comprehensive ICEH’s study on the topic and bring together a panel of experts to debate the data and its implications for public policy.

The analysis, one of the most detailed ever conducted in the country on the topic, delves into Brazil's fertility paradox. While general indicators are approaching those of developed countries, the reality among adolescents reveals a persistent and concerning scenario, which will be detailed during the event.

The new data indicates that social and regional inequality is the main feature of this reality, with a strong correlation between adolescent fertility rates and indicators of social deprivation, such as access to education and income. The full results will be presented and discussed during the live event.

The debate also marks the launch of the Special Page for Health Equity, a new initiative by ICEH/UFPel that will be integrated into Umane's Public Health Observatory, strengthening the production and dissemination of analyses on health disparities in the country.

The conversation will be moderated by Maria do Carmo Leal (ENSP/Fiocruz) and will feature ICEH/UFPel researchers Aluísio Barros and Janaína Calu Costa (also a professor at USP), Umane's general superintendent Thais Junqueira, and PAHO/WHO's equity advisor Oscar Mujica.
